Introduction

In 1957, in order to cultivate specialists in Arabic language, the government founded the Arabic sub-division under the Department of Oriental Languages and Cultures, National Chengchi University. In the beginning, human and material resources were very limited, until the first graduates of the Department came back after pursuing more advanced studies overseas. In 1978, considering the important role and worldwide influence of Arab countries, the governmental fund allowed the Arabic sub-division to be an independent department.

The academic staff received their degrees from various countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. Their research interests include Arabic language, history, religion, modern politics, etc. Since 1969, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been sending teaching staff from their country to the Department, and created stimulating learning experience for students. Because of the efforts of the members of the Department, the teaching of Arabic language and research has tremendously advanced. Thus, the Department of Arabic Language and Culture became a unique and incomparable institution in Taiwan.
